Castellina in Chianti is located in this area's heart known throughout the world for its scenery and typical products. Located between the Val d'Elsa, Val di Pesa and the Val d'Arbia it is a very interesting destination for tourism both historical and gastronomic.



Its origins are ancient, as shown by the various objects found in the area in the 80's when the excavations started and they attested a large town's existence, not far from today's historic center and other artifacts can still be seen as the Montecalvario mound and the Poggino's necropolis.

 

Its greatest glory, however, was reached in the Middle Ages, in spite of the various battles that followed in the area.
In Castellina in Chianti's center worth visiting the San Salvatore's Church , the San Leonino in Conio's Church, the St. Georgealla Piazza's Church and several villas such as Villa Bargagli of exquisite workmanship and villa Casafrassi and finally la Rocca, a fine military architecture's example.

The first historical remains, relative to the Rocca di Castellina, date back to around the eleventh century which described it as a Castello del Trebbio's possessions' advanced fortification, to which Castellina in Chianti belonged.
