Siena

The city of the Palio

Siena

Siena, in the heart of Tuscany, is one of the most beautiful medieval towns in Italy. The most important point of this city is Piazza del Campo, which with its shell-shaped, hosts every year,  in July and in August, the famous Palio of Siena.

The paving of the square, divided into nine sections representing the Governo dei Nove (government of the nine), a semi-democratic group that ruled the city from 1287 to 1935. The paving also symbolizes the mantle of the Madonna that protects the city.

According to legend the city was founded by Sieno, from which it takes its name. Sieno was the son of Remo the twin brother of Romolo, the founder and first king of Rome, and for this reason, in the city there are several statues depicting Romolo and Remo with a she-wolf.

If you go to Siena you definitely see the Palazzo Pubblico with its tower known like Torre del Mangia, and if you go up then the more 500 steps you can enjoy a breathtaking view.

In addition, by purchasing a special pass, you can visit the interior of the Cathedral, the Baptistery, the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo and the Crypt.
